80% of learning is visual.
Early detection of a vision problem is critical in the healthy development of children. Good vision is imperative to their academic success, hand-eye co-ordination and social development. Children often cannot communicate their visual disturbances to others, which places utmost importance in routine, annual eye exams. Many children's eye conditions can be best treated when caught at an early age.
It is recommended children have their first eye exam at 6 months, then again between the ages of 2-3 and annually thereafter. In Ontario, children with a valid health card are covered for a routine eye exam each year until their 20th birthday.

Myopia Control
Myopia, also known as near-sightedness, is a refractive vision condition effecting many people all over the world. The number of people wearing glasses for myopia has risen dramatically in recent decades. Treatments and research are underway to reduce the progression of myopia in order to provide children with improved quality of life and to reduce the risk of vision and eye health problems (e.g. glaucoma, retinal detachment, myopic macular degeneration).
There are a few types of treatments that have been studied and proven to reduce the progression of myopia in many children. We can help you decide which of these treatments will best manage your child’s myopia based on a number of factors including: your child’s age, your child’s spectacle prescription, how quickly their myopia is progressing and your child’s interest in the type of treatment. In general, it is best to initiate myopia control treatment as early as possible (when appropriate, at the onset of myopia).
At Scarborough Family Eye Care, we offer MiyoSmart spectacle lenses, MiSight contact lenses and low-dose atropine treatments to manage myopia. Consult with one of our doctors to learn how to best control your child’s myopia.
